When Edward Soffen, MD, went to his urologist for a regular checkup, he wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary. But then his physician recommended a new test, which returned potentially worrying results. Those results lead to an MRI, which showed several potentially concerning malignancies. A biopsy would confirm their suspicions.
“I had gone over it in my head: if [the biopsy] is positive, what are you going to do?” said Soffen. “What are you going to choose for yourself?”
The biopsy results came back: the doctor had now become the patient. Soffen, a radiation oncologist for more than three decades, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and he felt that only one perirectal spacer would be suitable for his treatment plan.
“I want the BioProtect balloon, hands down — and I want Dr. Zimberg to do it,” Soffen said.
A few weeks later, Soffen met with Shawn Zimberg, MD, one of the foremost BioProtect procedure experts in the nation, to receive the BioProtect Balloon Spacer — and invited a camera crew along.
